306 Uniform FAQ's
I’ve
heard
the uniforms called by different names, what terms does the Troop use
and what
do they mean? The
various terms are listed
below and is the standard BSA terminology:
Activity uniform (formerly Class B): Troop T-Shirt, Scout shorts or
similar, scout socks and comfortable closed toed shoes. The cap is
optional.
Field Uniform (formerly class A): Boy
Scout Uniform shirt with Troop T-shirt underneath,
Scout shorts or similar, scout socks and comfortable closed toed shoes.
The cap
is optional.
Full Dress
Uniform:
Boy Scout Uniform shirt with
Troop T-shirt underneath, Scout pants or similar, scout socks and
comfortable closed
toed neat looking shoes. The scout is expected to wear a neckerchief
and slide
along with a merit badge sash with all earned merit badges sewn on.
What
color
neckerchief does Troop 306 wear? Troop
306 has selected the Gold neckerchief with the
black embroidery emblems. It
is only worn during “formal”
events such as a Court of Honor, Scout Sunday, and formal meals.
Does
Troop 306
have custom made unit number patches available? Yes
we have enough to supply
everyone for the next few years. Generally everyone that joins the
Troop gets
one free. Each one after that each one is $1.00. Just see Mr. Conerly,
he usually
has one in his briefcase.
Does
the Troop
have Patrol Emblems? Sometimes,
Mrs. Mobley has
possession of what we do have. Please check with her. But if you are at
the
Scout Shop, go ahead and buy one to be safe.
I
can’t
afford an entire uniform, in what order should I buy the parts? The
first purchase should be at least one Troop
T-Shirt ($10), they are
available at Troop meetings. The
next purchase should be the Official Boy Scout Uniform Shirt with
patches
(World Crest, Council Strip, and Patrol Emblem). We have a unit number
patch
available. The next pieces to purchase are the Neckerchief (see above),
the
neckerchief slide, and a merit badge sash. Lastly would be the Scout
convertible pants. Birthdays and holidays are excellent times to give a
list to
relatives to purchase these items for your Scout. Check E-Bay and
thrift stores
for bargains.
The Troop is in
the process of organizing a uniform bank. Be sure to check back here
later for details.
What
shoes are
appropriate? This
depends on the activity, but
at all times the Scout must wear closed toed shoes. This is for his
safety.
Sneakers are great! If we are participating in an activity that
requires
something different, we will indicate that well in advance.
We
noticed that
some Scouts have a lot more patches on their uniforms, does my Scout
need those
and how do I get them? All
of the other patches are either
earned by advancement, by participating in certain activities or being
involved
with other groups. These generally are supplied either by the Troop or
by the
sponsor of the activity in which we are engaged. These are usually
included in
the activity fees or sometimes by paying a little extra to get them.
Do
you recommend
gluing the patches on or should they be sewn on? PLEASE
if at all possible, sew the patches on. Most patches need to be
changed from time to time because of rank advancement, etc. The glue
leaves a
nasty spot that will NOT come out. Also, if you sew the patches on, the
uniform
can be recycled when your Scout outgrows it.
I see
BSA has
updated to a new style of uniform. Do the Scouts need to change to the
new
format? No,
for Troop 306 this is your
option. For certain other Scouting activities, there may be
requirements to
update to the new format. An example is the 2010 National Scout
Jamboree. All
participants will need to wear the new style uniform if they are
participating
in that activity. See this website on uniform information. www.scoutstuff.org
