| Boys join the Scouts for different reasons. Our goal is to provide a program that incorporates those reasons, while ensuring that the boys have fun pursuing their goals and developing Character, Citizenship Skills and Moral, Intellectual and Physical Fitness along the way. Troop 306 uses the Scouting Program to facilitate these goals within an Outdoor Setting monthly and with weekly meetings. The First Year Program is a highly structured program that will help a Scout move from "Cub Scout Mode" or "Green Horn" to "Boy Scout" in his first year or earlier if the Scout is ambitious. The Regular Scout program has a different monthly theme, and Merit Badges and Counselors are introduced on a monthly basis. Boys learn the Patrol Method of leadership, the EDGE method of Training, and the SMART Goals method of Project Management. They will be given opportunities for adventure, service and leadership and will be encouraged to excel to whatever heights they aspire to. The Older Scout Program is a contingent of Scouts that are at least 13 and have been encouraged to form a group from within the Troop to focus on advanced Scouting Skills, Leadership, Service or High Adventure. These scouts will be encouraged to develop a program outside the regular Troop program to enhance their career, motivate younger scouts and to prepare them for Venturing Adventures --- During the First Year of a Scout's career, or until the rank of First Class, Scouts will be expected to learn the "fundamentals" of Scouting. Older Scouts will teach younger Scouts using our "FYE" curriculum so that they gain the basic knowledge in a safe environment. A First Class Scout is armed with basic scouting skills and is now equipped to begin his Scouting career in earnest. He can join a regular scout patrol and have a say in what adventures his patrol will go on. He will be eligible for selection into the Order of the Arrow and will have the opportunity to take on some responsibilities. Every week Patrols will provide training to the Troop and a First Class Scout will be expected to begin mastering Scout Skills so that he can assist in providing training to others. Merit Badges and rank advancement opportunities will be available and through hard work and application, he can rise to the rank of Star Scout. A Star Scout has demonstrated his ability to lead. He has committed himself to serve others and has earned a rank that many fail to achieve. A Star Scout will be looked to as a leader. He will set the example that younger Scouts will follow. He will be in a position where the senior scouts will look to him to be a future leader of the troop and it is through dedication and perseverance that he will work through all of the requirements to show he has what it takes to become a Life Scout. A Life Scout is an accomplished scout. His rank demonstrates to others that he is a of stronger stuff than most. He has proven himself in leadership positions. He has dedicated himself to service. He has persevered through training. A Life Scout is an esteemed rank that few can ever achieve. He has nothing more to prove to anyone and he should feel a great sense of accomplishment. His last test, should he choose to take it, is to go where few can follow: to Eagle. An Eagle Scout is a leader among leaders. A champion of Scouts. He has been there, done that, and has stayed around to show others that they can do it to. An Eagle is an example of what can be achieved by those that are willing to work longer, try harder and sacrifice more than anyone else. |
